Namaste Yoga Clothing - Wear the Divine Within You
“Namaste” can be heard almost anywhere these days. You may have seen it in a popular mudra, heard it at the end of a yoga class, or used it to salute your friends and fellow yogis. It’s taken on a number of modern-day forms, and its message resonates with many. In this post we’d like to feature some of your namaste yoga clothing pieces, so you can carry its meaning with you (and on you) throughout your day. Not sure what namaste means? We’ll walk you through that here too!
The Meaning of Namaste
Directly translated from Sanksrit, namaste (nah-mah-stay) means “I bow to you.” The first two syllables come from the word namas, which translates to “I bow,” and te, which means “you.”
Since it’s mainly used as a greeting, you can see why it’s often spoken at the beginning and end of a typical yoga class. Before and after we practice, we acknowledge the deep respect we have for those around us and our own ability to share the gift of yoga with them.
Featured Namaste Yoga Clothing
Our first three featured Namaste Yoga Clothing pieces showcase our silk-screened Namaste Prayer Hands design on the front, with an inspiring message on the back: “My Soul honors your soul. I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides. I honor the light, love, truth, beauty and peace within you, because it is also within me. In sharing these things we are united, we are the same, we are one. Namaste.”
Our last featured piece celebrates Namaste’s proliferation in pop culture with a punny saying: Nah Imma Stay…
Namaste’s Spiritual Background
Still, namaste is much more than just a greeting. The Hindus believe in a divine soul within each of us that lives beneath the heart chakra, just behind the sternum. Namaste is usually spoken with the palms pressed close together in a prayer-like gesture, with the fingers pointing upward and the thumbs close to the chest. This is called Añjali Mudrā, one of the many mudras that can be used to achieve a deeply meditative focus in yoga.
When you bow forward and say “namaste,” you are bowing to that same flame that lives within others. For this reason, we often hear it translated as “the light in me sees and honors the light in you.” It’s a recognition of the inner spark that binds humanity.
Namaste Today
Today, namaste has taken on a life all its own. It’s found a home in pop culture and in our hearts, and it’s definitely here to stay.
In its most revered form, when we speak the sacred words of namaste, we affirm that, even though we are all separate beings, we are one in the same. In this, we are all connected. Namaste is a true testament to the universe’s ability to join forces and the yogi’s ability to continuously reaffirm the many lessons we learn in practice.
